A growing digital economy presents Botswana with significant opportunities — but also exposes critical gaps in the country’s ICT workforce that must be addressed urgently.
This was the key message from the Botswana Information Technology Society (BITS) at a recent industry forum focused on Botswana’s readiness for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
BITS identified three priority areas requiring immediate attention:
1. ICT Education Alignment — Current university and college curricula must be more closely aligned with industry needs, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, data science and artificial intelligence.
2. Professional Certification — Too few Botswana-based ICT professionals hold internationally recognised certifications. BITS is working on a framework to make professional development more accessible and affordable.
3. Women in ICT — Gender representation in the ICT sector remains low. The BITS Women Chapter is actively working to change this through mentorship programmes, networking events and career development support.
BITS called on government, employers and educational institutions to increase investment in ICT talent development, and invited all ICT practitioners to join BITS as part of the solution.
