Committees
BITS operates through five standing committees that drive the Society's work across professional standards, membership, finance, education, and communications.
Only paid-up members are eligible for appointment or election to BITS committees. The following standing committees are constituted in pursuit of the Society's objectives (Constitution Article 6.4).
👥 Membership Committee
Composition: 5 members — the President (chair), General Secretary, and three other members.
Duties:
- Receive, consider, determine grades and recommend applications for membership
- Consider and recommend applications for regrading
- Recommend reviews to members' subscriptions
- Devise and recommend strategies for recruitment of members
- Constitute the disciplinary committee when required
- Carry out activities that enhance the membership of the Society
- Make recommendations to the Council
📋 Standards Committee
Composition: 6 members — the President (chair), General Secretary, and four other members. Only voting members in the grades of Fellow and Member are eligible.
Duties:
- Draft codes of conduct and practice for the IT profession
- Receive, consider and recommend amendments to the codes of conduct and practice
- Administer the provisions of the codes of conduct and practice
- Carry out activities that enhance high standards in the Society
- Make recommendations to the Council
📈 Finance Committee
Composition: 5 members — the Treasurer (chairperson), Assistant Treasurer, and three other members.
Duties:
- Receive and consider proposals for activity funding
- Organise fund-raising activities for specific projects
- Monitor and review the Society's financial position
- Carry out activities that contribute to the financial viability of the Society
- Make recommendations to the Council
📣 Publicity & Information Committee
Composition: 6 members — the Assistant General Secretary and five other members.
Duties:
- Publicise Society activities
- Review and report on previous activities and projects
- Prepare proposals for activities and projects
- Engage in public relations activities to promote the image and wellbeing of the Society
- Identify problems faced by various parties interested in IT and recommend solutions
- Gather and maintain information on major developments in the IT profession worldwide
- Promote information dissemination through newsletters and publications
- Identify ways the Society can make a positive impact on the community
- Make recommendations to the Council
🏫 Education & Training Committee
Composition: 5 members — two Council members and three other members.
Duties:
- Keep the education community informed of BITS' education and training activities
- Provide IT-related advice, support and assistance to the education community
- Encourage awareness of IT applications within education and inform educators of new developments
- Organise programmes aimed at enlightening the education community on career opportunities in IT
- Foster education and training linkages with other IT professional organisations worldwide
- Organise seminars, workshops, conferences and programmes that promote the education and training objectives of the Society
- Make recommendations to the Council
Specialist Interest Groups (SIGs) & User Interest Groups (UIGs)
In addition to standing committees, BITS encourages members to form Specialist Interest Groups (SIGs) and User Interest Groups (UIGs) based on areas of shared ICT interest (Constitution Article 6.4.7).
- SIGs are constituted by members with shared interest in a specialised IT area
- UIGs are constituted by members with shared interest in specific IT systems and/or application areas
- Formation of any Interest Group requires an application with terms of reference, made to the Council for recommendation to the AGM
- Interest Groups serve as forums for exchange of ideas on IT issues
